The New York State Academy of Mineralogy (NYSAM) is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of the mineralogy of New York State. The goals of the organization are to work with the New York State Museum:
(a) to promote the study of New York State's mineralogy - broadly defined to include relevant aspects of geology, mineral industry, and the history of mineral science, mining, and mineral collecting; (b) to facilitate the gathering of individual specimens and collections of New York State minerals for preservation in the New York State Museum and to engage in raising funds for such acquisitions;
(c) to encourage field studies of New York State's mineralogy;
(d) to encourage the production of publications that foster public appreciation of, and increase scientific understanding of, New York State mineralogy;
(e) to support educational activities involving New York mineralogy, such as providing scholarships or grants for the study of New York State mineralogy, facilitating mutually beneficial interaction among the mineral collecting community of New York State, the mineral industry, academia and the New York State Museum, and encouraging the use of the collections for educational purposes.

The chief goals of the organization are to work with the New York State Museum to promote the study of New York State's mineralogy and to facilitate the gathering of exceptional individual specimens and outstanding collections for preservation in the New York State Museum.
